The sixth-year pro scored again at 9:25, cleaning up a loose puck from an Atkinson shot to extend the advantage to 2-0 and to take the club lead with six goals. Matt Calvert snapped in a centering feed from Ryan Craig for another man-advantage strike at 18:06, while Jonathan Audy-Marchessault's goal just 48 seconds later gave Springfield a 4-0 lead after one period. Calvert banked a puck in off of Admirals netminder Frederik Andersen at 19:03 of the second to make it 5-0. McElhinney was up to the task again in net, refusing all 35 Admirals attempts to win his eighth game and capture his fourth shutout of 2012-2013.

After Boyd Kane's goal tied the contest later in the period, Jonathan Audy-Marchessault tipped in a Ryan Johansen feed in the middle frame to give Springfield a 2-1 edge. Matt Pope's tally at 7:15 of the second knotted the score, 2-2. The Falcons and Bears skated the final half of the game scoreless, and the teams ventured to a shootout. Jeff Taffe and Matt Calvert traded first-round goals in the breakaway session, but neither team could score in the next five segments. Stanislav Galiev lifted a puck into the net to lead off the seventh round, and Braden Holtby turned aside Andrew Joudrey's bid to extend the game, giving Hershey a 3-2 victory.

SPRINGFIELD - A player that Springfield Falcons fans cheered against many times last season will not have a hard time changing their opinions if he keeps this up. Jonathan Audy-Marchessault, a forward on those Connecticut Whale teams that tormented the Falcons a year ago, has begun the process of building goodwill with the MassMutual Center faithful. In the Birds' American Hockey League preseason home opener Friday, the 21-year-old forward netted a hat trick - something no Falcon did last season - and an assist in a 4-3 victory over the Worcester Sharks.
